Starlink’s in India: Elon Musk’s satellite-internet service Starlink has stirred excitement in India again but this time with some serious caveats. The company briefly published pricing for its residential plan, only to retract it hours later, calling the numbers “dummy data” shown by mistake.
- Monthly subscription: ₹ 8,600
- One-time hardware kit cost: ₹ 34,000
- Promised benefits: “unlimited data”, 30-day trial period, plug-and-play setup, over 99.9% uptime, all-weather connectivity.
- Speeds were expected to be in the range of 25–150 Mbps.
This announcement created a buzz among Indian internet users especially those in remote or rural regions, where high-speed fibre or cable internet remains unreliable or unavailable.
Shortly after the leak, Starlink clarified that the listing was not official. According to Lauren Dreyer Vice President of Starlink Business Operations the website was showing placeholder data due to a configuration glitch. The company emphasised that it is not yet accepting orders in India, and that final pricing and availability have not been confirmed.
Thus, while the leaked prices gave a glimpse of what could come, they should not be treated as the final offer. Starlink needs to secure all regulatory approvals before launching full services across India.
When might Starlink launch for real?
- Starlink’s plan rollout seems to aim for early 2026, after regulatory and spectrum approvals complete.
- The company has not yet released any confirmed “Business” or enterprise-level plans those are expected later, once the residential service stabilises.
- Given the high price tag (if similar to the leak), the service may initially appeal more to remote areas, rural communities, cottages, large homes or small enterprises, rather than mass suburban/urban users especially where fibre or 5G is already available.
What this could mean for India
- For remote/hilly/village regions with little broadband infrastructure: Starlink could be a game changer, delivering internet where fibre and cable can’t reach.
- For regular urban users, however, the cost if around ₹ 8,600 per month may be considerably higher than existing wired or 5G internet plans. That might limit adoption among price-sensitive users.
- For businesses, small offices or homes with high internet needs, especially in remote areas Starlink could offer a more stable and reliable alternative, once (and if) the pricing and launch stabilise.
Starlink’s brief listing of a ₹ 8,600/month residential plan + ₹ 34,000 hardware cost caused excitement but also confusion. As of now, that pricing is not official, and the company has clarified the page was a glitch. India’s Starlink rollout remains in the regulatory-approval phase.
Even so if the promise of satellite internet holds up, and if future pricing becomes reasonable this could become a major option for parts of India where broadband is unreliable or unavailable.
